Surround Sound Basics

Surround sound in your home is the closest thing that we can achieve to having the experience of going to the movies for real. The sound of a movie or television program is a huge part of the immersive nature of the cinematic experience. The sounds of a movie bring the terror of a horror movie out or our souls. Without the sound, the jumpscare isn't scary. The sounds of a movie make the action palpable, the emotional powerful and the drama poignant. Without sound, there can be no award winning soundtracks. Sound helps us suspend our disbelief and brings us further into the world of imagination that movies provide.

Setting your home or apartment up with an incredible sound system is one of the best ways to create an immersive experience with your home entertainment system. Doing your best to create that experience can be expensive but its worth it.

Location, location, location

The locations of your speakers are an essential part of creating the surround sound experience. Speakers improperly placed or poorly arranged are not going to achieve the desired effect and all of the money you've spent and your effort will have been for naught.

To make any notes on placing the speakers easier to understand, it's helpful to use the metaphor of a clock face. On a clock face 12 o'clock is dead center, right in front of us. That's not a great spot for speakers, seeing as its dead in the center of television. The best possible spots for speakers in a home entertainment environment are at angles; at approximately 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock in the front and 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock in the back. Good surround sound speakers are usually placed at these kinds of angles to help with creating the surround effect you're going for.

Wiring

Another truly essential piece of setting up a surround sound system in the home is the wiring. If the television isn't correctly connected to the speakers you're considering using, you're going to run into some pretty significant problems (read: you won't be hearing much of anything).

Read the directions carefully when installing the wiring and connecting them to your TV. The directions tell you where everything is supposed to connect. The back of a TV can be an intimidating sight, the directions are there to help you handle that. So read them! Carefully!

When you're installing your wiring, its important to avoid leaving the wires all over the floor. One easy way to avoid this is to use plastic attachments to keep wires running along walls and oriented in other ways that help avoid them becoming obstructions to trip on.

Keep in mind these are just a few things to consider when setting up a home surround sound system. Use them to help set up your system and enjoy your movie experience! Good luck!
