Tasty Traditional Cuisine Is On the Menu at Cambridge's Greek Corner Restaurant

By Pamela Sosnowski

Cambridge's Greek Corner Restaurant literally is on a corner - where the city's busy Massachusetts Avenue intersects with Dudley Street. The outside of the restaurant makes it blend in with the street's convenience stores and other shops, but the interior - with its scenic murals and blue and white theme - leaves little doubt that it's a Greek restaurant. So does the smell of authentic Greek dishes being cooked and served.

"We prepare our food the way it is done in restaurants in Greece," says the restaurant's owner, George Boretos. "We use many of our mother's recipes. For example, the baked lamb we serve is prepared using traditional Greek spices and virgin Greek olive oil (and) is cooked slowly to perfection."

On the menu customers will find all of the traditional dishes including gyros, souvlaki, moussaka, spinach pie, kebabs, salads, and avgolemono, and an egg-lemon soup that is a Greek delicacy. Says Boretos, "Our favorite dishes on the menu are the baked lamb, the lamb chops, and the chicken kebab." All of the items are available for take-out, and the restaurant can also be hired for catering events. Patrons can also enjoy Mythos beer, Greece's most popular beer brand, coffee, and traditional desserts including baklava and rice pudding. The restaurant has developed a reputation in online reviews for generous portions, fresh food, and friendly service.

The Greek Corner Restaurant has been a Cambridge tradition since 1989, and was named Best of Boston in 2008. The business was opened after its owner moved from Canada to the Boston area. "We had a background in the restaurant business in Montreal," says Boretos. "When we moved to the Boston area we found there were not a lot of authentic Greek restaurants so we decided to open one using the experiences we had working in restaurants in both Montreal and Greece."

Being in an ethnically diverse neighborhood, Greek Corner Restaurant feels right at home in its location. "Cambridge is a very culturally diverse community which makes it a great place to run an ethnic restaurant," explains Boretos. "People are very open to trying different types of foods. The city is also very helpful to small restaurants like ours."

Greek Corner Restaurant is located at 2366 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge.
