The Lore of Winchester's Local Shops: Featuring Pairings Wine & Food on "Quality Drinking on a Budget"

By Kristen Bosse

When it comes to Greater Boston and its surrounding towns, most of the area is still filled with the hustle and bustle of city life. If you are looking for a quaint town that can serve as a peaceful step away from the city, Winchester may fit the bill. With its friendly community and variety of local shops, Winchester acts as a tranquil getaway from days spent in the noisy city. Two of these locals, Ray and Lori Schaefer, opened up their shop "Pairings" years back so that they could share their love of wine and food. Their location has turned into a frequent stop for Winchester locals, attracting people of all ages to come engage in wine tastings and grab quality food and drink.

With holidays right around the corner, everyone is looking to squeeze a few pennies wherever they can. When it comes to entertaining for a crowd, paying for food and drink can get rather expensive very quickly. With alcohol usually being the most costly part of the party, figuring out a way to grab quality drinks on a budget is key! Ray was more than happy to share some of his secrets when it comes to delicious, cheap drinks.

"For good tasting beers a cut above, but not quite at the craft level, we recommend both Pabst Blue Ribbon or any of the Yeungling beers. For just a little more, try any of several local brews, such as Mayflower, Jack's Abbey, Clown Shoes, Notch Brewing, Fisherman's, Ipswich, Peak Organic, and Spencer. Whatever style you're looking for, you can find excellent local beer."

When asked the same question about wine, Ray expressed that they have a huge selection of wine that won't break the bank. With over 200 wines under fifteen dollars, it should be easy to pick something that you and your friends can enjoy. Some of the Owner's favorites are the Petit Bourgeois Sauvignon Blanc and Saint-Peyre Picpoul de Pinet (white wines) and Carato from Tuscany (red wine). The latter was even chosen as "Most Popular Wine Under $20" in a recent Plonkapalooza in the Globe. If you are having trouble choosing, Pairings has a great value deal that allows you to get large quantities of wine at a discount.

For all you liquor drinkers out there, Schaefer also had some great recommendations for cheap selections. Gordon's Gin, Tito's Vodka, and Johnnie Red blended scotch/whiskey are three great choices when you need great tasting, moderately priced alcohol. If you are looking for something local, check out the Bolly Boy Vodka and Whiskey. Your taste buds and wallet will be sure to thank you!

With a staff that is so knowledgeable and passionate about their selections, it is easy to see why "Pairings" is a favorite among locals. Whether you are looking for inexpensive wine, or some great cheese for entertaining, don't hesitate to stop by this shop and take in its warm, welcoming atmosphere. If you are unsure of what selections to make, the shop holds wine and food pairing events three times a week! Check it out only in Winchester, MA.
