The Perfect Choice for Valentine's Day: Featuring A Tavola Restaurant

By Kristen Bosse

Sorry men, it doesn't matter whether you think it's a real holiday or not: it's your job to make her have a perfect Valentine's Day. Romance is something that a lot of relationships are lacking, despite most individuals desiring it. Regardless of what men may think, women want to feel special on this day. From the moment they wake up to the moment they lay their head on the pillow, they are waiting to see what surprises you conjured up. With the pressure on, it can be hard to decide what constitutes the perfect Valentine's Day. Those in the Winchester area should have no problem, with one of the best modern Italian restaurants in Greater Boston located right in their town.

A Tavola

Originally the Chef and Owner of Bistro 5 in Medford, Vittorio Ettore decided to open up a second location called "A Tavola", a more casual alternative than his exclusive bistro. A Tavola, literally translates to "at the table", an expression used in Italy as a dinner calling to gather everyone around the table to enjoy delicious food and each other. Diners at the restaurant will walk in to find rustic wooden tables, intimate lighting, and chalkboards naming specials lining the walls. Decor is simple, with antique tools and signage from Wright-Locke Farm down the road.

Chef Ettore's vision for his new location fell in line with his "farm-to-fork" trend, which focuses on using the freshest of ingredients (brought in locally from Wright-Locke Farm and Kimball Fruit Farm) to create unique, delectable dishes. "Ingredients is number one", Ettore claims. "Without well sourced ingredients, you really don't have much." Chef is definitely a man of his word, even going as far as growing their own vegetables and herbs behind A Tavola in a garden they maintain during the season.

Although their décor may cater more to your rustic side, the cuisine is a bit more complex. Their eclectic, Italian menu features "piattini", or small plates, filled with artisan cheeses, fish and vegetables, and wonderful antipasti selections including calamari and sautéed mussels. If you're looking for something a bit heartier, the Chef also offers an array of homemade pastas, seafood risotto, and even a smoked pig roast.

Two of their most popular dishes are the Rigatoni Bolgnese and the Porchetta, both which hold a special place with Chef Ettore. The Bolognese is homemade each day, using a recipe passed down from Ettore's mother. The Porchetta is perhaps their most unique dish, made by slow roasting an entire young pig! This dish is prized because it is one of the only places in Boston that makes the real-deal Porchetta. Most restaurants will take a pork loin and wrap with pork belly. This speeds up the process, and is often a cheaper option. "That is not Porchetta!", Ettore exclaims. As you can see, he is very passionate about his pig. Take a look below to see what the finished product of this tasty dish.

Of course, all of this delicious food is best served alongside a selection from their exclusively Italian wine list. Their wine list features an all-Italian wine program representing many regions and styles. In addition to bottles, wine is served in carafes called "quartino" (250ml or a 'quarter' of a liter). These glass and a half size servings are perfect for sharing and experimenting different pairings. Each pour is enough for two people to get a taste, and a bottle is finished in three orders. With this method, everything stays fresh!

With the intimate lighting, amazingly intricate dishes, and a delicious selection of wine meant for sharing, A Tavola is truly the quintessential restaurant for your Valentine's Day surprise. Along with the elaborate food and wine menu comes a friendly and knowledgeable staff, ready and willing to help you and your date decide exactly what you're craving. If that's not enough, their fresh basked bread and homemade gelato are sure to send your taste buds into overdrive. Grab your reservation fast and give your special someone a Valentine's Day she'll never forget.
