The Scoop N Scootery's Cool Concept: Door-To-Door Ice Cream Delivery

By Pamela Sosnowski

You can have just about any kind of food delivered to your door these days: pizza, wraps, and ethnic dishes, to name a few. But ice cream has always been off limits, until now. Somerville-based The Scoop N Scootery may just be the first ice cream and frozen yogurt delivery service in the Boston area, bringing sundaes directly to your doorstop as late as 2 AM, without the fear of melting.

"Design your sundae from the comfort of your home or choose one of our signature sundaes and get it delivered," owner Austin Crittenden said. "We have a fleet of drivers with medical grade freezers so all sundaes will arrive quickly in perfect condition. Through trial and error, we learned about ice cream consistency, temperature fluctuations, humidity and the ideal method to maintain ice cream sundaes throughout the delivery process."

The Scoop N Scootery also operates a storefront on Massachusetts Avenue in downtown Arlington, open until 2 AM on most nights for those late evening ice cream cravings. The shop is a year old, while the delivery service has existed since 2013. Business is booming; Crittenden estimates that some nights his staff makes up to 130 local deliveries, and sees a constant stream of ice cream lovers coming through the doors every day.

Some of the mouthwatering sundae flavors include the Peanut Butter Bomb, CarMallow Anthony, and Black Heart, which is made with German chocolate cake ice cream. The yogurt sundaes are no less impressive, including such names as Red Riding Hood (featuring red velvet cake), Royal Purple, and Chuckie Finster.

Customers can also build their own sundae and make it as simple or elaborate as they like with their choice of a variety of toppings. Cheesecake bites, pop tarts, and cookie dough all find their way into the ice cream shop's creations. Crittenden and his team also love experimenting with new toppings and combinations and making each sundae as aesthetically pleasing as its taste.

What also makes The Scoop N Scootery a standout in the frozen dessert business is that they only use premium and fresh ingredients in their sundaes.

"Our fruit is incredibly fresh, our brownie/cookie and pie crust toppings are baked in store and our candies are hand chopped rather than the made-for-ice-cream generics used by most ice cream shops," Crittenden said. "We spend the extra time and effort to enhance the flavor of our sundaes and create a unique customization option that gives customers a treat they've never experience before."

As The Scoop N Scootery originally launched as an ice cream delivery and catering company, it can create orders for any size customer, whether it's an individual or someone that needs dozens of sundaes for a party. The Scoop N Scootery's truck can travel to any size event and serve up to 100 guests an hour. This option is perfect for birthday parties, weddings, community events or more, or the company can also drop off pre-made sundaes to offices and events within a five mile radius of its Somerville office.

With a warm reception for its store and no shortage of ice cream lovers, Crittenden is excited about The Scoop N Scootery's future.

"We started this thing to change the game," he said. "It started as an ice cream delivery business and grew into something much more and we are all so excited to see what comes next."
