3 Reasons Why Brookline is a Great Place to Raise a Family: Featuring Attorney at Law Jacob Walters and Brookline Recreation

By Kristen Bosse

A swanky and hip suburb of Boston, Brookline is filled with cool boutiques and ethnic restaurants alongside miles of green space. Money Magazine certainly thinks so, naming it #21 on their list of "Best Places to Live 2014". With less than a twenty minute commute into Boston, and a high school ranked 15th in state, it is no wonder folks from all around New England are choosing to settle down here. In nature Brookline is a family-driven neighborhood, offering countless activities for youth and adult residents, as well as preserving their historical charm (JFK was born here!). The low divorce rate and high demand for large family homes also helps preserve the tight knit community feel of the town. Be sure to move quickly if you're interested! With no decrease in real estate costs in sight, Brookline will continue to be a town that is high in demand.

High-In-Demand Real Estate

As you can imagine, real estate in Brookline is one of the highest in demand surrounding Boston, falling just behind Newton, MA. Its close proximity to the city allows family members to work in the city, while still residing in a safer neighborhood with excellent schools. For these reasons, the real estate market is extremely tight, with more buyers than there are homes available. Jacob Walters, Attorney at Law and current resident of Brookline, gave us some great insight on the current real estate climate.

"The good news for sellers and bad news for buyers is there seems to be no end to the rising cost of real estate. Currently buyers are making offers above asking price with no contingencies in order to be competitive. Prices are substantially higher than they were just 5-10 years ago. "

Walters comments confirm that real estate in Brookline seems to sell as soon as it becomes available- making the town somewhat recession proof. In fact, in the past ten years, housing prices has steadily increased in the town, including the year of the United States recession. This means that although you may spend a fortune moving into the town, you can predict a full return on investment when it is time to sell. How many towns can say that?

Things to Do for Everyone

With over 60,000 residents, the town of Brookline strives to make sure there are an ample amount of activities available for fun, fitness, sports, and more. Brookline recreation offers over 400 programs and activities for the community to enjoy. From Archery to Zumba and everything in between, they have one of the widest arrays of offerings in New England. Adults can choose from fitness classes or games at the golf course, while kids can engage in summer camp or skating at the local ice rink!

Lisa Paradis, Director of Brookline Recreation, shared with us one of their newest programs that has become increasingly popular recently. "Brookline Recreation is constantly offering the latest and greatest classes to the community. One example of a new program is our "Passport to Fitness" program where for only $10, you can purchase a pass to sample health and wellness classes at over 20 different businesses in Brookline."

Programs such as these prove that Brookline's recreation department is staying on top of the latest trends and providing residents with new additions frequently. Kids in the community can take advantage of these activities as well. The town's soccer program accommodates over 1200 players each season in grades 2 through 8, and their Dolphins Swim team already has 200 people registered!

Their summer camp options are also very popular, where children take part in arts & crafts, sports and games, aquatic activities, etc. If older children are looking for something a bit different, then can choose to participate in Brookline's Leader in Training program. The program provides mature and team-oriented teens with numerous experiences, giving them the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and work with children directly while working along side other full time staff in the field.

While these teens work on honing their leadership skills, their parents can play a couple games at the local golf course, Robert T Lynch Municipal. The course itself has had over three million dollars in improvements and has become a popular destination for local golfers. If you're interested in the summer programs be sure to move fast. Registration starts in mid-January and usually books up within a couple weeks!

A Safe Haven Outside the City

With the high rate of crime occurring in the city of Boston everyday, parents who work in the city are always in search of a safe neighborhood to call home. Although there is still criminal activity in Brookline, most of it is minor in nature. According to Attorney Jacob Walters, most cases deal with illegal operation of motor vehicles ie. stolen vehicles, driving under the influence, driving without a license or registration, etc. Other common cases include breaking and entering charges, or attempted break-ins for homes and vehicles in the area.

If this isn't enough to convince you, the Brookline Police Department recently released crime statistics for the year 2014. Apart from two rape charges, the town's criminal activity is limited to more minor offenses, including ten motor vehicle theft attempts, and only fifteen robbery cases. There are zero murder charges for the entire year. Brookline residents can feel safe knowing that the Police Department is on top of things and fully prepared to face more serious crime. When you purchase a home as expensive as the ones in Brookline, you expect a certain level of safety and security. Brookline without a doubt, comes through.
