Trina's Starlite Lounge Serves Up Some of Somerville's Best Brunch Alongside Some of the Best Tunes

By S. Mathur

When it comes to food, drink and music, the staff at Trina's Starlite Lounge know what they're doing. At least, that's what the customers are saying: "It's like your best friends opened a bar, where they served all of your favorite foods, the freshest beer, and perfect cocktails. And Emma's playlists are always ON POINT!"

"This is an awesome place for hand crafted cocktails and a come-as-you-are atmosphere. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. The food is delicious. My personal favorites are the starlight dog and sweet potato hash!"

Emma Hollander, Managing Partner, feels that there are some things that set Trina's apart: "First of all, from the outside we look like a dirty dive bar, which the space was for many years before us. When you walk in, you'll find that we're more of a 50's style bar, with a creative, but approachable, cocktail menu, and an semi-extensive craft local beer list. Our focus is on hospitality, but our food is delicious and affordable."

The decor is vintage and '50s inspired, and Hollander adds that "Everything was hand picked by Josh Childs, one of the owners, or given to us as gifts by friends. Over the years, Josh has carefully placed a new piece of art on each wall as he finds them." The bar stools, booths and other fixtures are all authentic items, found in flea markets and vintage stores.

While Hollander is modest about her claims for the food, it has wowed both guests and critics. Trina's has featured on the Food Network's Diners, Dives and Drive-ins, Guy's Grocery Games and other shows. It was named the Improper Bostonian's Best Neighborhood Bar, Inman Square in 2011, 2012 and 2015. The hot dogs, brunches and burgers have all won "best of" awards over the years.

Guy Fieri recommends the fried chicken and buttermilk waffles with hot pepper syrup, and the homemade Tater Tots with rosemary garlic aioli and Parm. The brunches at Trina's are famous, and the menu includes sloppy joe eggs and chicken on a biscuit, as well as special brunch cocktails. The Service Industry Brunch on Mondays has people wishing they could skip work.

The original Starlite cocktails are described as "fun, tasty, approachable craft cocktails" and they change with the seasons. For example, there's the Rocking Chair with black tea-infused bonded bourbon, Canton ginger cognac, lemon, the Gentleman with bourbon, Belle de Brillet, lemon, the Starlite Cocktail with white rum, parfait amour, lemon, bubbles, Lady Danger with bourbon, Campari, yellow Chartreuse and guava and the Bella Rosa weigh tequilla rosemary-strawberry infused Casoni, grapefruit and sparking rosè.

The lounge is located in the heart of Inman Square, on the Cambridge/Somerville line. Hollander says that "Inman Square is a lovely little neighborhood, and as community and regulars are our main focus, we tend to fit right in!"
