True Italian Authenticity Behind the Red Door at Pinocchio's Pizza & Subs

By Elisha Neubauer

When it comes to pizza, there are always so many choices. Toppings, crust, size, sauce, cheese- you name it. So when you're looking for truly great, mind-altering pizza, those fast-food style chain joints just don't do the trick. No, what you need is a small business that focuses on the taste, style, and authenticity of this famed food.

That's exactly what you'll find on Winthrop Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The entrance alone screams authenticity: nestled in a white washed brick wall, you'll find the stark red door that leads to Pinocchio's Pizza & Subs. Once inside, you're nose alone will let you know that you've reached an authentic pizza parlor- and the menu will not disappoint, either.

So what can you find on the menu at Pinocchio's Pizza & Subs? We sat down with Adam DiCenso, Owner of Pinocchio's, to talk about his booming business.

"The Sicilian style pizza is what we are known for," DiCenso states. If you're not a pizza connoisseur, like us, don't worry. We asked DiCenso for a little more detail. "It is a thick crust, deep dish pizza. We stretch the dough into large pans and let it rise until the dough is nice and fluffy and ready for cooking." While Pinocchio's Sicilian style pizza may be their calling card, their regular pizza, what is referred to as New York style pizza, is every bit as good. "It all goes back to the dough," DiCenso explains. "We make it fresh every day."

Surprisingly, DiCenso tells us that his best selling pizzas are actually vegetarian. "Our two most popular ones are the tomato basil, which is lots of slices of fresh tomato with our delicious mozzarella cheese, olive oil and fresh basil sprinkled on top," he states. "The other vegetarian option, which is my favorite, is the spinach pizza. It's a perfect mixture of spinach, garlic, olive oil and mozzarella cheese." If you want to get an idea of what's available at Pinocchio's before stepping in, DiCenso suggests checking out their Instagram page for both guest and store photos.

Pinocchio's Pizza & Subs' use of new social media sites speaks to the varied demographic that visits the eatery. "I like to tell people that we get 'all types' in our shop," says DiCenso. "Harvard Square attracts a blend of students, locals, tourists, academics, internationals, etc. I meet a new interesting person almost every day."

While talking with DiCenso, we quickly realized what the favorite deal among patrons was: the two-slice deal, which consists of two slices of thick crust pizza for only $5.80. "I either get a tomato basil, a spinach, a pepperoni and/or buffalo chicken," DiCenso tells us. If you're looking for something a little different than pizza though, don't worry. Pinocchio's has you covered. "We are also known for our steak and cheese subs," explains DiCenso. "They rival anything produced in Philadelphia. I would suggest the steak and cheese with grilled mushrooms and all the vegetables with a little mayonnaise- life-changing!"
