Winston Flowers & Garden: Rich Color, Texture, and Amazing Scents

By Courtney Clark

Winston Flowers & Garden has nurtured a relationship with the Newton and greater Boston community for more than 70 years. The 2-acre garden center and floral shop prides itself on working closely with growers to stock the best blossoms, on making beautiful arrangements, and on being an important part of family holidays and life events in the community.

Ted and David Winston are co-owners of the family business. The brothers grew up helping their father run his flower shop and fondly remember him going out of his way to make others feel special. Today, the two carry on the business with the same attention to maintaining relationships, personally visiting each grower they work with- from New England family farms to European exporters.

The Winstons strive for excellence in the flowers they sell. Every bloom, they explain, is "hand-selected for its unique character, longevity, freshness, rarity and color." Flowers come from as close as Massachusetts and as far away as Holland, Italy, France, and Ecuador. Winston Flowers purchases directly from growers with whom they have maintained a relationship for decades. Once the flowers are purchased, Winston Flowers tests each plant in a variety of conditions to insure quality.

Of course, Winston Flowers & Garden would not be a "garden" without some diversity! The shop uses herbs and scents to create texture in its designs, buying mint, rosemary and scented geranium from local farms in Massachusetts and neighboring states. David explains that the shop also carries annual plants, perennials, rare plants, and shrubs. The result is a shop that is interactive so that customers can have an ever-changing experience of "rich color, texture and amazing scents."

Although the beautiful blossoms surely speak for themselves, the Winstons work hard to foster relationships with their clients as well. Some families have been coming to Winston Flowers for generations, entrusting them with events like weddings, birthdays, and graduations. David tells us, "We've been to their homes, designed their interior and exterior gardens, filled their containers seasonally, and decorated their homes for Christmas and the holidays. We've formed relationships with many families here in Newton that last a lifetime and are generational, just like our family.

Following in their father's footsteps, the Winston brothers succeed in caring for clients- as well as beautiful flowers and plants. They have no plans to stop "growing" their business anytime soon.
