What are some of the most signs that your HVAC system needs to be repaired?

As far as signs that your HVAC system needs repair, there are a few. Noisy operation of your system could be a first sign of trouble. Comfort levels in the house are becoming harder to achieve or the operating costs of the HVAC system are escalating. Dirty vents in the house or soot outside the chimney or flue venting areas can be signs also.

When would you suggest that homeowners consider replacing it instead of repairing?

Replacement of your HVAC system over repairing should be considered if the repair expense is high or comparable to replacement. Older systems over 20 years or more or poor efficiency models should definitely be considered also due to the potential energy savings of newer models as well as safety concerns. Old HVAC systems could potentially corrode to the point of failure of the heat exchanger, a dangerous situation.

Is there a time frame (or age) when you would usually recommend replacing heating and/or cooling equipment?

A time frame for replacement would be 20 years or older. Warranties have lapsed, failure of components is increased and efficiencies are going down.

Can you briefly talk about some of the benefits of getting a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning, or HVAC, system?

Benefits to getting a new system are the much better efficiency levels achieved by the newer appliances. Newer systems have more safety devices and monitoring controls and are generally much quieter and cleaner. Also new programs offered by some of the local utilities are giving great rebates and incentives to replacing systems, some as much as $1600!

Do you have tips for people who have a noisy HVAC system?

As far as tips for noisy HVAC systems, annual or bi-annual service is recommended. Depending on the source of the noise, a well placed shot of WD-40 in the right area can help quiet noisy bearings until a qualified service repairman can make the repair.
