125 Years of Exceptional Product Knowledge: An Interview with Ace Hardware of Roslindale

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We are having our 125th anniversary this year! Since 1888, Roslindale Hardware has served the local community providing hardware, plumbing, electrical, lawn & garden supplies, paint, locks, keys and more, with personalized-service and caring-advice regarding most any problem the homeowner or professional needs to solve. We have a very professional staff with many decades of experience and product knowledge. We strive to provide top-notch customer service and will often special order items not easily found or stocked by others.

What is your specific position at Roslindale Ace Hardware?

I have been the owner and president of the company since 1982.

Apart from offering countless supplies for contractors and homeowners in the area, what services outside of the store are available?

While we will occasionally travel to the customer's location to clarify what a specific problem or need is, our window/screen repair services are generally conducted in-house. We also re-wire lamps and provide general repairs to almost anything! We often refer homeowners to contractors and local handymen for more involved requests.

What are some of the most innovative products you offer?

Sometimes the most so called "innovative" ideas or products are actually the very old ones that have been set-aside or forgotten. We stock many of these "old fashioned" items that are truly hard-to-find, such as washboards and 20 Mule Team Borax. Because we are an Ace store, our customers can also shop online at www.acehardware.com and have the items shipped freight-free to our store with our weekly truck delivery. This is extremely useful for large items that UPS does not ship, such as BBQ grills, snow-blowers and lawnmowers. This allows us to provide access to thousands of items that will not fit on display in our physical store.

What is your company's philosophy?

Our philosophy has always been to provide the customer with old-fashioned, honest service by listening first, then providing the right product for the job, at a fair price. We treat all of our customers' needs, large or small, with the same care and respect. We often send people home empty-handed...because they didn't really need anything but advice!

How does your staff remain knowledgeable about the array or products?

Ace Hardware does a very good job at providing their dealers with up-to-the-minute information and access to the latest industry information and products. Our customers are also a major source of novel information. If someone asks for something we don't have or know about, we will research the item and often begin stocking it the very next week! Additionally, we hold regular team-meetings and training-sessions and always pair experienced employees with any newer people on the sales floor.

What sets your business apart from other comparable companies?

Having been in business for 125 years tells you that we have a loyal and trusting following. We like to think that our outstanding customer service is greatly appreciated by homeowners and anyone who might be intimidated by a big-box hardware store. Our customers don't have to engage in an epic search of a huge store to find what they need, or to speak with a real human being. We greet you at the door. You can "fix that leak" or "patch that hole" and get on with your weekend. Time is money!
