The Benefits of a Home Security System: An Interview with Michael Major of Cunningham Security Systems

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Cunningham Security Systems is a complete low voltage contractor providing design, installation, monitoring and service for residential and commercial security systems, fire alarm systems, video surveillance systems, access control systems, intercom systems and telephone entry systems. Our market areas are Maine, New Hampshire and Eastern Massachusetts.

2. Can you briefly explain what a home security system is?

A residential security system consists of a controller which is commonly referred to as a control panel, with peripheral devices such as keypads, sirens, door and window contacts, motion detectors, glass break sensors, environmental sensors such as smoke detectors, CO detectors, high water sensors and temperature sensors. Together all of these components provide the homeowner with the peace of mind they are seeking for their specific concerns. Some people care about the threats from intrusion only while other people care about protecting their property from the damage caused by fire, smoke, water, freezing, etc. I usually ask people if their goal is to protect the people in the home, to protect the home when they are away, or both.

How much control and security does this system offer?

Systems installed by Cunningham Security Systems offer home and business owners the flexibility of controlling their systems at user interfaces within the home or from their smart phone and internet enabled devices so no matter where in the world they are, providing they have cellular service or an internet connection, they can be connected to their home.

What are the main reasons why people choose to install/use security systems in their homes?

People choose to have security systems for many reasons as discussed above. Additionally, with the growing number of people who want to be connected to their home to be able to check on their children, pets, lighting, thermostats, and even garage doors, people are choosing a security system platform to enable that connection to their homes.

What are some of the basic options that homeowners have for a new access home security system?

Companies like Honeywell and 2GIG offer "all in one" security system platforms that are cellular and internet based and offer basic security and connected home conveniences at prices that are very affordable. All of the connected devices communicate wirelessly to the control panel which makes the installation effortless. Total Connect 2.0 and Alarm.com provide the remote accessibility that every homeowner wants today and the flexibility to tailor the conveniences for every lifestyle.

Do you have any tips to help people get the most out of their home security system?

This is the age of information right? There are many different manufacturers offering home security and an exponential number of installers selling those systems. Choose a known reputable manufacturer and find a local installer who will be there to provide exceptional service after the sale. One of the biggest reasons Cunningham Security Systems continues to enjoy double digit growth year after year is our commitment to provide the best service in our marketplace. We are not a sales driven organization like the national companies and the DIY companies, we are a customer service organization that happens to be in the security industry. We may not be the low price leader but we will be right here for you when you need us most.
